Anaconda 3

Anaconda 3

Just got off a three day and three night Whitsunday boatride on the Anaconda 3 sailboat. Can't say we were overly impressed. We did quite a bit of research into what boat we wanted. Our criteria was a boat where we could get a private cabin and we thought if we paid a bit more over the odds, the boat would be clean and bedbug free. We were told when we booked the cruise that the boat wasn't BYO but they sold cans of beer on the boat for 2.50 (AUD). Fair enough we thought. When we checked in the following day at their office the alarm bells should have been ringing as the agent in their office was quite rude and uninterested. However we put it behind us and a few hours later went to catch our boat. The boat itself was pretty good and of course the Whitsunday Islands are spectacular. Myself and my girlfriend had decided that we weren't going to dive over the three days as we have just come from Cairns and are all dived out. However, we were still subjected to the hard-sell on the diving trips even though we are experienced divers and knew that the conditions would be pretty bad - unfortunately the wind was picking up and the rain looked like it was on the way. As we got underway we were told that there is an honestly system for the beer where a clipboard is kept beside the fridge with our names on it and we were to put a tick beside our name each time we took a beer or soft drink. The crews names were on the clipboard aswell so they would be doing the same. It was when we had a look at the clipboard that we found out that the beers were 4 dollars apiece. We were also told that if there were any discrepancies between the number of ticks and the number of beers in the fridge we would all have to cough up the extra money as payment. Of course, by the end of the trip there was 20 cans unaccounted for and we were all asked for extra money to pay for these. When I enquired if the crew were asked to contribute I was told "No, because we have been putting our ticks by our names". So was I by the way but I still had to pay extra. Also, one of the girls on the trip was sharing a private cabin with her friend and was getting bitten every night. She went to one of the crew who told her it must be an allergic reaction. She was waking up with more and more bites so she had a good check of her sheets and found little bugs. She asked the captain what they were and he said "bedbugs". No compensation or even an apology was given to her about this. The sheets weren't even changed. Outrageous really. The same girl was insulted by on the crew during a drinking game on one of the evenings. Some of the crew were really nice and friendly but about half of them looked like they didn't want to be there or weren't interested if you weren't diving. It rained one of the days and most of us were down below reading books or watching a DVD when one or two of the crew came in and pretty much berated us for sitting around - this was when it was teeming with rain outside. All in all, I would say the Anaconda 3 is one to avoid if you can help it. There are far cheaper boats out there where you can BYO and you will do just as much as we did on the Anaconda 3. And there's not much point paying over the odds for bed bugs. You can get them on the cheapest of the cheap boats. I will say that the food was excellent though. Good and plenty of it.
